Google DNS and OpenDNS are what is known as recursive resolvers, this means they do not hold records themselves unlike Cloudflare’s authoritative nameservers. Instead, Google DNS and OpenDNS handle requests by querying authoritative DNS servers which do hold DNS records. You can read more on the differences in our documentation.
You could make use of a subdomain to maintain functionality from your previous host while your main domain is hosted by Cloudflare (and vice-versa), however the subdomain would not benefit from Cloudflare’s performance and security features.
